The 1855 Three Cent Silver Piece (Buy on eBay) has the lowest mintage of the type two design at only 139,000 pieces, plus an unknown but very small number of Proofs.
The issue is very difficult to find in original condition and striking weakness is a common problem. These factors make finding gem examples extremely difficult. It is estimated that approximately two dozen gem examples have survived, as certified by either PCGS or NGC. The population reports from the services indicate a higher number, but this is heavily influenced by resubmissions.
Besides striking weakness die clashes are also commonly encountered on this issue and on others of the type two design as well.
